It’s a pretty huge honor to walk into the home of a photographer and artist whom you’ve greatly admired for the last few years. Naturally, the house of such a creative and artistic photographer is flooded with natural light! It comes from all angles on white walls (which is a miracle in itself, since she has two littles and crisp, clean white walls!). Her clean and minimalistic style made me want to put my feet up and stay awhile, but I was there to photograph, after all. I can’t say enough about this amazing lady, and her welcoming spirit. Their house is truly a HOME, and is filled with the sounds of toddlers: crashing, laughing, and running. I nestled myself right into their comfortable rhythm, and they were nothing but generous and welcoming and even provided donuts and treats during our day together. They live in Gold Hill, Oregon, smack dab in the middle of beautiful groves of trees and wide-open fields. The area is ripe for exploring, and explore we did. Their little Jude is a gregarious toddler with an infection laugh, and sweet little Norah is curious and smart. Both children were a delight and full of smiles for me; I loved gathering shots of this season in their lives.
Documenting lifestyle sessions is always a little messy. It’s true. And it’s messy in an age where perfectly curated Instagram feeds tell us messes and energetic kids and chickens running wild may not be “perfect”, but they sure are beautiful. While lifestyle sessions are revealing and vulnerable, I believe they are one of the most important things you can do as a family. I find these images complement your walls of classic posed prints and portraits, I find that it fills in the gaps of storytelling, and speaks between the lines. When I see gallery walls of portraits in the homes of families, it makes my heart soar to have both personality and perfection coupled alongside each other. I believe in both. I photograph both.
